Dnieper hydroelectric plant construction

Dniprohes (Dnieper hydroelectric station) under construction on the river Dnieper in Ukraine, USSR. The dam was constructed between 1927 and 1932. At almost a kilometre long and 60 metres high, it was considered one of Stalins great achievements. In raising the level of the Dnieper by almost 40 metres it made the entire river navigable. The hydroelectric station provides power for the surrounding industrial centres. It was later destroyed during the Second World War, but rebuilt afterwards. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the monumental construction of the Dnieper hydroelectric plant, also known as Dniprohes or Dnieper hydroelectric station, on the mighty river Dnieper in Ukraine during the era of the Soviet Union. The ambitious project took place between 1927 and 1932 under Stalin's regime and stood as a testament to his vision for industrial development. Spanning almost a kilometre in length and towering at 60 metres high, this dam was considered one of Stalin's greatest achievements. The significance of this engineering marvel extended beyond its imposing size. By raising the water level of the Dnieper by nearly 40 metres, it transformed the entire river into a navigable route, facilitating transportation and trade throughout Ukraine. Moreover, this hydroelectric station played a pivotal role in powering surrounding industrial centers with its turbine technology. Sadly, during World War II, this symbol of progress fell victim to destruction; however, it was rebuilt after the war ended. This photograph captures not only an awe-inspiring feat of human ingenuity but also serves as a poignant reminder of resilience amidst adversity. With cranes dotting its landscape and showcasing advanced technological prowess for that time period, this image encapsulates both pride in achievement and hope for progress within Soviet society. It stands as an enduring testament to how infrastructure projects can shape nations' destinies while providing essential services like electricity generation even decades later.
