Dmitri Belyaev, Soviet zoologist

Dmitri Konstantinovich Belyaev (1917-1985), Soviet zoologist, making a telephone call. Belyaev, a member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, is famous for the breeding experiments he carried out in the 1950s with silver foxes (Vulpes vulpes). The selective breeding that produced tame foxes also destabilised the gene pool, leading to changes in fur colour. This finding was used to explain the same process in dogs. Belyaev was director of the Russian Institute of Cytology and Genetics from 1959 to 1985. Photographed in Novosibirsk, Russia, in 1984

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the renowned Soviet zoologist, Dmitri Belyaev, engrossed in a telephone conversation. Taken in Novosibirsk, Russia in 1984, Belyaev is depicted at his desk within the Russian Institute of Cytology and Genetics. As an esteemed member of the USSR Academy of Sciences and director of this prestigious institute from 1959 to 1985, Belyaev's contributions to the field of biology are immeasurable. Notably recognized for his groundbreaking breeding experiments with silver foxes during the 1950s, Belyaev's work revolutionized our understanding of genetics. Through selective breeding techniques aimed at taming these wild creatures, he inadvertently discovered that fur color changes occurred as a result. This pivotal finding was instrumental in explaining similar processes observed in domestic dogs. Belyaev's legacy extends far beyond his research on foxes; he played a vital role in advancing biological knowledge throughout Central Asia and beyond. With over six decades dedicated to scientific exploration and discovery, this photograph encapsulates a momentous chapter in history when communication technology connected brilliant minds across continents. As we gaze upon this image capturing Belyaev deep in thought while communicating via telephone, we are reminded not only of his remarkable achievements but also how science transcends borders and time periods. It serves as a poignant reminder that even amidst technological advancements, it is human curiosity and dedication that propel us forward into new realms of knowledge.
