Dipteronotus fish fossil C018 / 9403
Dipteronotus fish fossil. Sandstone block containing a fossilised Dipteronotus fish. The fish is 10 centimetres long. This specimen dates from around 240 million years ago, during the Triassic. This fossil was found in the Voltzia sandstone quarries of the Vosges mountain range in northern France, and is part of the Grauvogel-Gall collection, held in Strasbourg, France. At this time, there was a large delta in what is now the Vosges region. Repeated sediment deposition and droughts led to the formation of fossils

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable fossilized Dipteronotus fish, preserved in a sandstone block. Measuring 10 centimeters in length, this ancient specimen dates back approximately 240 million years to the Triassic period. Discovered within the Voltzia sandstone quarries of the scenic Vosges mountain range in northern France, it now resides as part of the prestigious Grauvogel-Gall collection held in Strasbourg. During this era, when the Vosges region was transformed into a vast delta, repeated sediment deposition and periods of drought created ideal conditions for fossil formation. This exquisite piece offers us a glimpse into an extraordinary chapter of natural history. The photograph captures every intricate detail with precision and finesse. The studio shot highlights the delicate features of this prehistoric creature while emphasizing its significance within biological and paleontological studies. It serves as a testament to our ever-growing understanding of Earth's rich biodiversity and evolutionary past. Displayed against a backdrop that exudes both elegance and authenticity, this single stone harbors immense scientific value. Its presence within the museum setting invites visitors to embark on an awe-inspiring journey through time—a reminder that life has flourished on our planet long before our existence. Gilles Mermet's expertly captured image not only celebrates nature's wonders but also pays homage to those who tirelessly preserve these invaluable relics for future generations to marvel at.
