Deaf-mute education, 1917 C016 / 4516

Deaf-mute education. Teacher teaching a deaf-mute girl to talk. The girl has her hand placed on the teachers throat to feel the sounds made while talking. At the time, many deaf children were labelled mute because they were not taught to speak. This lesson is taking place at a training school for deaf-mutes in Sulphur, Oklahoma, USA. This photograph, obtained by US sociologist and photographer Lewis Wickes Hine (1874-1940), dates from April 1917. Hine was a photographer for the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC), documenting working and living conditions for children, and campaigning against child labour and poverty in the USA

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in April 1917 by Lewis Wickes Hine, offers a poignant glimpse into the world of deaf-mute education during the early 20th century. In this image, we witness a dedicated teacher guiding a young deaf-mute girl on her journey to learn how to speak. The girl places her hand gently on the teacher's throat, feeling the vibrations as sounds are formed. During this time period, many deaf children were wrongly labeled as mute simply because they were not provided with proper speech training. This particular lesson takes place at a training school for deaf-mutes in Sulphur, Oklahoma, USA - an institution that aimed to break down barriers and empower these students through education. Hine was renowned for his work documenting child labor and poverty in America but also used his camera lens to shed light on issues surrounding disability and access to education. Through this powerful image, he captures both the determination of the teacher and the eagerness of the student as they navigate their way towards effective communication. This historical photograph serves as a reminder of how far we have come in terms of inclusive education for individuals with disabilities. It highlights the importance of providing equal opportunities for all learners while showcasing one small step forward in breaking down societal misconceptions about those who are differently abled.
