Crustal thickness map of Moon, Clementine data
Lunar crust. Map showing the crustal thickness over the whole Moon, derived from data gathered by the Clementine spacecraft. The Moons near side is at right, the far side at left. Colours represent crust thickness: from purple (less than 30km) to blue (30-50km), green (50-60km), yellow (60-80km), red (over 80km). Large impact basins show as thin crustal areas (purple), including the great seas of the near side (upper right). The small purple impact basin at lower centre is the Mare Orientale. The far side is dominated by thick mountain terrain but also has the large SP-Aitken impact area in the south (blue, lower left)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a detailed crustal thickness map of the Moon, compiled using data collected by the Clementine spacecraft. The image provides an incredible visual representation of the lunar surface, with the near side positioned on the right and the far side on the left. The varying colors in this map correspond to different levels of crust thickness. Starting from purple, which represents areas with less than 30 kilometers of crust, we transition through shades of blue (30-50km), green (50-60km), yellow (60-80km), and finally red for regions boasting over 80 kilometers of crust. Notably, large impact basins are clearly visible as thin areas with a purple hue. These include prominent features like the great seas located on the near side's upper right. Additionally, one can observe Mare Orientale—a smaller yet distinct purple impact basin situated at lower center. While thick mountainous terrain dominates much of the Moon's far side, there is also a significant presence of blue-colored regions denoting substantial crustal thickness. Noteworthy among these is SP-Aitken—an expansive impact area located in the south. Overall, this remarkable print offers valuable insights into our celestial neighbor's geological composition and serves as a testament to humanity's ongoing exploration and understanding of space.
