Corrected knee dislocation, X-ray
Corrected knee dislocation. Coloured X-ray of the dislocated and twisted knee of a female baby being manipulated back into place. The hand of the doctor is at bottom. The lower leg bones had twisted 180 degrees to the femur (at top) due to the dislocation, with the tibia (shin bone), the thicker of the two lower leg bones, moving to the right of the fibula (thinner lower leg bone). Also the bones on either side of the knee joint were not aligned. Dislocation can occur due to injury such as a hard knock or twisting movement, or may be a congenital (present from birth) abnormality such as here. It can cause considerable pain. For images showing the dislocation before treatment, see M330/1558 to M330/1560

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of medical expertise and compassion as a doctor manipulates a dislocated knee back into place. The subject of the X-ray is a young female baby, whose twisted and dislocated knee is prominently displayed in vibrant colors. The lower leg bones are seen to have rotated an astonishing 180 degrees to the femur, with the tibia shifting to the right of the fibula. Additionally, the bones on either side of the knee joint are visibly misaligned. Knee dislocations can occur due to various factors such as injury or congenital abnormalities. In this case, it appears to be a congenital condition that has caused immense pain for this little girl. However, under the skilled hands of the doctor at bottom frame, hope shines through. The circular image showcases not only human anatomy but also highlights how medical intervention can rectify such conditions. This diagnostic tool provides valuable insights into bone positioning and helps guide treatment decisions. Orthopaedics and paediatrics come together in this powerful image that represents both diagnosis and treatment processes involved in correcting knee dislocations. It serves as a reminder of how healthcare professionals strive tirelessly to restore health and well-being even from an early age.
