Corpus albicans, light micrograph C015 / 6226

Corpus albicans. Light micrograph of a section through an ovary showing a corpus albicans (centre). Each menstrual cycle one egg (ovum) reaches maturity and develops into a Graafian follicle. The Graafian follicle releases the egg at ovulation and then develops into a corpus luteum, which secretes progesterone to build up the lining of the uterus, ready for a fertilised egg. If there is no fertilised egg after 12 days the corpus luteum stops secreting and degenerates into a corpus albicans. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print titled "Corpus Albicans" offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the intricate workings of the female reproductive system. Captured under a light microscope, this image showcases a section through an ovary, with the focal point being the corpus albicans situated at its center. The corpus albicans is formed when the Graafian follicle, which houses and nurtures an egg during each menstrual cycle, releases that egg at ovulation. Following this release, it transforms into a corpus luteum - responsible for secreting progesterone to prepare the uterine lining for potential fertilization. However, if fertilization does not occur within 12 days, this vital structure ceases secretion and degenerates into what we see here as the corpus albicans. Within this snapshot of biology's marvels lies a story of hope and possibility intertwined with nature's delicate balance. It serves as a reminder of our bodies' incredible ability to adapt and regenerate in response to life's ever-changing circumstances. With its detailed histological features beautifully showcased by light microscopy techniques, this photograph provides valuable insights into gynecology and human anatomy. Whether you are studying reproductive health or simply captivated by nature's wonders on a microscopic scale, "Corpus Albicans" invites you to explore one of life's most remarkable processes – fertility – encapsulated in vibrant detail.
