Common sheep tick, SEM
Common sheep tick, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This tick (Ixodes ricinus) is the principal vector of Lyme disease in Europe. It is common in the damp underbrush of European woods and attacks various domestic and wild animals, including dogs and humans. It carries the spirochaete bacterium (Borrelia burgdorferi) that causes both Lyme disease and a closely-related disease known as erythema migrans. Both diseases cause skin lesions, neurological and cardiac abnormalities and recurrent arthritis. Magnification: x10 at 6x7cm size
