Coloured TEM of HHV6 infecting a cell

Coloured transmission electron micrograph of Human Herpes Virus type 6 (HHV6) infecting a human cell. Within a pseudopodium (cell outgrowth centre), virus particles (red) are seen each with a thick protein envelope and a darker staining core of DNA genetic material. Some particles have an immature coat and core. Once mature, these HHV6 viruses will leave the cell to reinfect other human cells. These viruses were isolated from an AIDS patient suffering secondary infection; HHV6 is now known to be the cause of the childhood disease roseola infantum which produces sudden fever, irritability, and a skin rash. Magnification: x29, 900 at 6x4.5cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of microscopic organisms. In this coloured transmission electron micrograph, we witness the relentless invasion of a human cell by Human Herpes Virus type 6 (HHV6). The image reveals virus particles, depicted in striking red hues, nestled within a pseudopodium - an outgrowth center of the infected cell. Each virus particle is characterized by its thick protein envelope and a darker staining core composed of DNA genetic material. Some particles exhibit an immature coat and core, highlighting their ongoing development within the host cell. Once matured, these HHV6 viruses will break free from their captive environment to seek out new human cells for reinfection. Interestingly, these particular viruses were isolated from an AIDS patient suffering from a secondary infection. It has since been discovered that HHV6 is responsible for causing roseola infantum - a childhood disease known for its sudden fever, irritability, and distinctive skin rash. With magnification at x29,900 and measuring 6x4.5cm in size, this mesmerizing image offers us a glimpse into the hidden world of viruses. It serves as a reminder of how even seemingly invisible entities can have profound impacts on our health and well-being.
