Coloured SEM of woodworm beetle emerging from wood

Woodworm beetle. Coloured Scanning Elecctron Micrograph of an adult woodworm beetle, Anobium punctatum. The compound eyes with their numerous rounded facets can be seen. In front of each eye the segmented antennae are attached. Both adults & larvae attack wood, forming networks of burrows, but it is the larvae which cause the most damage. Eggs are laid on the surface of dead wood, including beams & rafters, timber, furniture and dead trees, and the larvae hatch out and begin to eat their way inwards. The damage can be extensive without being noticeable; a few holes on the surface reveal little of the network of tunnels inside. Magnification: x90 at 5x7cm size. x300 at 10x8ins

Anobium Punctatum Beetle Insecta Type Woodworm

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a woodworm beetle emerging from its wooden habitat. The coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) reveals the adult beetle, known as Anobium punctatum, in all its glory. The compound eyes with their numerous rounded facets are prominently displayed, while segmented antennae can be seen attached in front of each eye. Both adults and larvae of this species are notorious for attacking wood, creating complex networks of burrows. However, it is the larvae that inflict the most damage. Eggs laid on various surfaces such as dead wood, beams, rafters, timber, furniture, and even dead trees serve as breeding grounds for these destructive creatures. Once hatched, the larvae begin to voraciously consume their way into the interior of their wooden hosts. The extent of damage caused by these beetles can be extensive without any visible signs on the surface. Only a few holes may indicate their presence while concealing an intricate network of tunnels within. This SEM image provides a magnification level of x90 at 5x7cm size or x300 at 10x8ins. Nature enthusiasts and zoology aficionados will find this print fascinating due to its portrayal of an often overlooked yet significant aspect of wildlife - wood-boring insects like the woodworm beetle (Anobium punctatum).
