Coloured SEM of sperm fertilising an egg

Coloured scanning electron micrograph of sperm (yellow) fertilising an egg cell (round and pink). At top centre three polar bodies (purple and blue) are seen. Before ovulation the egg cell (primary oocyte) ends its first meiotic division which gives rise to two cells known as the secondary oocyte and the first polar body. If after ovulation the secondary oocyte is penetrated by sperm, it completes the second meiotic division producing a fertilised oocyte and another polar body. The first polar body divides into two and all three polar bodies shortly degenerate. Magnification: x1530 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library provides a mesmerizing glimpse into the intricate process of human reproduction. In this colored scanning electron micrograph, we witness the remarkable moment when a sperm fertilizes an egg cell, creating new life. The image showcases the delicate beauty of this pivotal event. The sperm, depicted in vibrant yellow hues, can be seen making its way towards the round and pink egg cell. At the top center of the frame, three polar bodies in shades of purple and blue are visible. These structures represent crucial stages in the development of the egg cell before and after ovulation. Before ovulation occurs, the primary oocyte undergoes its first meiotic division, resulting in two cells: a secondary oocyte and a first polar body. If fertilization takes place after ovulation, as illustrated here, the secondary oocyte completes its second meiotic division to form a fertilized oocyte and another polar body. While all three polar bodies eventually degenerate shortly after their formation, they play vital roles in facilitating successful fertilization. With an impressive magnification level of x1530 at 6x7cm size, this photograph offers us an awe-inspiring view into one of nature's most extraordinary processes – human fertilization. It serves as a reminder of both our biological complexity and our capacity for creation within our own bodies.
