Coloured SEM of red blood cells in blood vessel
Red blood cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a group of red blood cells (erythrocytes). They are travelling through a large vessel and are just entering a small vessel. During its short life (about four months) a red blood cell covers about 15km every day for a total of 1500km. In a litre of blood there are normally 5000 billion red blood cells. They transport oxygen from the lungs to the tissues where it is necessary for all metabolic processes. The carbon dioxide produced in these processes is returned to the lungs where it is exhaled. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of red blood cells within our bodies. In this coloured scanning electron micrograph, a group of red blood cells, or erythrocytes, can be seen as they navigate through a vast network of blood vessels. Specifically, they are captured at the moment when they enter a smaller vessel after traversing through a larger one. These remarkable cells play an essential role in our circulatory system. Over their short lifespan of approximately four months, each red blood cell covers an astonishing distance of about 15 kilometers every day, accumulating to a staggering total journey of 1500 kilometers. Within just one liter of blood, there exist around 5000 billion red blood cells diligently carrying out their duty. Their primary function is to transport oxygen from the lungs to all tissues in our body where it is crucial for various metabolic processes. Simultaneously, these diligent workers collect carbon dioxide produced during these processes and return it back to the lungs for exhalation. Magnified at x870 and presented in a 6x7cm size format by Science Photo Library (not affiliated with any company), this microscopic image offers us an awe-inspiring glimpse into the inner workings of our anatomy. It serves as a reminder of the extraordinary complexity that exists within even the tiniest components that make up our human form - highlighting both beauty and functionality simultaneously.
