Coloured SEM of internal membrane of hen eggshell

Eggshell membrane. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the internal membrane from the shell of a hens egg. Several membranes are found around the embryo in a birds egg. The shell membranes adhere to the inner surface of the shell, with an air space between them at one end of the egg. Changes in the eggshell as the chick develops permit the passage of carbon dioxide and oxygen and the release of water vapour via the shell membranes. The function of the membranes and the shell is to protect the developing chick from trauma and dessication. Magnification: x1500 at 5x7cm size. x5200 at 10x8ins. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the intricate beauty of a hen eggshell's internal membrane. In this colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we are granted a glimpse into the hidden world within an egg. The image reveals several delicate membranes enveloping the embryo, serving as its protective shield. The shell membranes cling to the inner surface of the eggshell, leaving a small air space at one end. As the chick develops, these membranes undergo changes that allow for vital processes to occur. Carbon dioxide and oxygen can pass through them, ensuring proper respiration for the growing life inside. Additionally, water vapor is released via these membranes, preventing excessive moisture buildup. The primary function of both the shell and its accompanying membranes is to safeguard the developing chick from external harm and dehydration. This remarkable adaptation shields it from potential trauma while maintaining an optimal environment for growth. At a magnification of x1500 in a 5x7cm size or x5200 in 10x8ins dimensions, this SEM photograph provides us with an up-close exploration of nature's ingenuity. It reminds us of how even seemingly ordinary objects like eggs possess extraordinary complexity when examined under scientific scrutiny. This awe-inspiring image was captured by Science Photo Library—an invaluable resource that allows us to appreciate and understand our world through stunning visual representations like this one.
