Coloured SEM of a 7401 TTL integrated circuit

Coloured scanning electron micrograph of the surface of a 7401 TTL integrated circuit (IC) (TTL denotes transistor-transistor logic). The image shows the whole chip attached to its ceramic substrate (the upper ceramic layer has been removed to reveal chip itself), with 14 connecting leads bonded around the periphery of the chip. Since 2 of these leads are connections for common & ground, it may be assumed that the chip contains at least 12 transistors. The image also reveals the arrangement of the MOS (metal oxide silicon) transistors in patterned layers, etched onto surface of the original silicon wafer. Magnification: x30 at 6x4.5cm size. Chip is a Quad 2 Input NAND gate, open collector. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © DR JEREMY BURGESS/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases a coloured scanning electron micrograph of the surface of a 7401 TTL integrated circuit (IC). The intricate details captured in this image provide an up-close look at the inner workings of this electronic marvel. The entire chip is prominently displayed, securely attached to its ceramic substrate. The removal of the upper ceramic layer allows us to witness the chip itself, exposing its fascinating components. Around the periphery of the chip, we can observe 14 connecting leads that are meticulously bonded. A remarkable aspect revealed by this image is that two of these leads serve as connections for common and ground purposes. This suggests that within this compact structure, there are at least 12 transistors skillfully integrated. Furthermore, through careful examination, one can discern the arrangement of MOS (metal oxide silicon) transistors in patterned layers etched onto the surface of the original silicon wafer. This intricate design highlights both precision and complexity in creating such advanced technology. With a magnification level set at x30 on a 6x4.5cm scale, every minuscule detail has been brought into focus for our appreciation and understanding. It is important to note that this particular chip belongs to a Quad 2 Input NAND gate with an open collector configuration. In conclusion, Science Photo Library's stunning print offers viewers an exclusive glimpse into cutting-edge electronics and semiconductor technology through their mesmerizing SEM photograph capturing every minute facet with astonishing clarity.
