Colonial alga, Dinobryon

Light micrograph of a branching colony of the golden- brown alga Dinobryon sp.. The colony is composed of single-celled algae, each of which secretes a fine, transparent, cellulose sheath known as a lorica. Only the tips of the branches of the colony are inhabited; the bases are composed of old, abandoned sheaths. The cells are attached to the inside of the lorica by a contractile stalk. They possess two chloroplasts, two contractile vacuoles, an eyespot and two different types of flagellum. Various unidentified filamentous algae are also visible in the image. Magnification: x200 at 35mm size

Alga Algae Algal Colonial Light Micrograph

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a colonial alga known as Dinobryon. The golden-brown alga forms a branching colony composed of single-celled algae, each encased in a delicate and transparent cellulose sheath called a lorica. In this image, only the tips of the branches are inhabited while the bases consist of old, abandoned sheaths. The cells within the lorica are attached by contractile stalks and possess remarkable features such as two chloroplasts, two contractile vacuoles, an eyespot for light detection, and two different types of flagellum for movement. These adaptations allow Dinobryon to thrive in its aquatic habitat. As we explore this micrograph further, we can also spot various unidentified filamentous algae intermingled with Dinobryon's colonies. This serves as a reminder that nature is teeming with diverse organisms coexisting in harmony. Captured at 200 times magnification on a 35mm size slide, this mesmerizing photograph offers us an intimate glimpse into the hidden world of these colonial algae. It highlights their intricate structures and showcases their unique characteristics that make them essential components of our natural ecosystems. This stunning print from Science Photo Library invites us to appreciate not only the beauty but also the complexity present within even some of nature's smallest inhabitants.
