Col. freeze-fracture TEM of cell nucleus membrane

Cell nucleus membrane. Coloured freeze-fracture transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of part of the nuclear membrane of a liver cell. The concave fracture-face of the outer membrane of a nucleus is seen. This membrane reveals rounded nuclear pores. Pores in the membrane allow large molecules to pass out of the nucleus into the cytoplasm to communicate with other parts of the cell. A double membrane encloses the nucleus to keep the cells genetic material in a single unit. Around the nucleus can be seen cytoplasm with cell organelles (at lower frame). This cell specimen was frozen, then fractured to reveal its internal surfaces. Magnification: x25, 000 at 5x6 inch size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a freeze-fracture transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the cell nucleus membrane. The image captures a section of the nuclear membrane from a liver cell, revealing its intricate structure and functionality. The concave fracture-face of the outer membrane is prominently displayed, exhibiting rounded nuclear pores that play a crucial role in cellular communication. These pores allow large molecules to pass out of the nucleus into the cytoplasm, facilitating interactions with other parts of the cell. Enclosing the nucleus is a double membrane, serving as a protective barrier to maintain the integrity and organization of genetic material within each individual cell. Surrounding this vital core, we can observe glimpses of cytoplasm teeming with various organelles at lower frame. To capture this remarkable image, an innovative technique was employed: freezing and fracturing allowed for an unprecedented view into the internal surfaces of this microscopic world. At magnification levels reaching x25,000 on a 5x6 inch print size, every intricate detail becomes visible. This mesmerizing snapshot offers profound insights into biology's inner workings - unveiling secrets about nuclear membranes, pore structures, and overall cellular architecture. It stands as both an artistic masterpiece and scientific marvel – inviting us to explore nature's hidden wonders through cutting-edge technology provided by Science Photo Library.
