Closed stoma, SEM

Closed stoma. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a closed stoma (centre) on the leaf surface of the succulent Kalanchoe (Kalanchoe blossfeldiana). Stomata are pores in the leaf surface that regulate gaseous exhange with the environment. Succulent plants are adapted to hot, dry conditions and open their stomata at night to minimise water loss. The stomata absorb carbon dioxide and convert it to an organic acid. When they close during the day, they continue the process of photosynthesis, using the carbon dioxide collected the night before. The flecks on the surface are wax. Magnification: X 520 at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a closed stoma, captured using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The image features the leaf surface of the resilient succulent plant Kalanchoe blossfeldiana. Stomata, which are tiny pores on the leaf's surface, play a crucial role in regulating gaseous exchange with the environment. Succulent plants like this one have adapted to hot and dry conditions by opening their stomata at night to minimize water loss. The closed stoma seen in this photograph continues its vital functions during daylight hours. It absorbs carbon dioxide from the surroundings and converts it into organic acid through photosynthesis. This process allows these remarkable plants to utilize carbon dioxide collected overnight efficiently. The wax flecks visible on the leaf's surface add an intriguing texture to this SEM image. With a magnification of X 520 at 10 centimeters wide, intricate details become apparent, revealing nature's exquisite design. This stunning visual representation provides insights into botany and biology while showcasing the beauty of nature up close. The false coloring technique used enhances our understanding of this biological phenomenon by highlighting key elements such as epidermis, pore structure, and gas exchange processes. Science Photo Library presents this extraordinary print that captures both scientific curiosity and aesthetic appreciation for our natural world.
