Ciliate protozoan membranelles, SEM
Ciliate protozoan membranelles, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Protozoa are a type of unicellular animal. The ciliate protozoa are so named because of the hair-like cilia which are used for locomotion and sweeping in food. Here, a fused set of cilia (membranelles, upper centre) is used to draw bacteria and other food particles into the oral groove. Ciliate protozoa live in water and are typically invisible to the naked eye, although the largest ciliate can reach a length of 2 millimetres. Magnification: x2500 when printed 10 centimetres wide. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of ciliate protozoan membranelles, captured through a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). These mesmerizing creatures belong to the fascinating realm of unicellular animals known as protozoa. Aptly named for their hair-like cilia, these organisms employ these delicate structures for both locomotion and gathering food. In this image, we witness a fusion of cilia forming membranelles at the upper center. This ingenious adaptation allows them to draw in bacteria and other microscopic particles into their oral groove. While typically invisible to the naked eye, it is astonishing to learn that some ciliate protozoa can grow up to 2 millimeters long. Living exclusively in water habitats, these elusive beings contribute significantly to our understanding of aquatic ecosystems. With a magnification level of x2500 when printed at 10 centimeters wide, this photograph offers us an unprecedented glimpse into their hidden world. The vibrant colors used in this SEM capture not only enhance its aesthetic appeal but also emphasize the biological intricacies within each organism. As we delve deeper into microbiology and explore single-celled life forms like protists, we gain invaluable insights into the diversity and complexity present even within seemingly simple organisms. This remarkable image from Science Photo Library serves as a testament to nature's extraordinary wonders and invites us on a journey through uncharted territories within our own planet's vast biodiversity.
