Cigar galaxy (M82), composite image

Cigar galaxy (M82). Combined optical, infrared and X-ray image of the Cigar galaxy (M82). This image was obtained by combining data from three of NASAs Great Observatories, found in Earth orbit. Optical data (orange/green, central galactic plane) is from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Infrared data (red, dust clouds) is from the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST). X-ray data (blue, hot gas) is from the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO). M82 is 12 million light years from Earth, in the constellation of Ursa Major

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the Cigar galaxy (M82) in all its glory. A composite image, it combines optical, infrared, and X-ray data obtained by three of NASA's Great Observatories orbiting Earth. The Hubble Space Telescope contributes the orange and green hues that highlight the central galactic plane, providing a stunning view of M82's spiral arms adorned with countless stars. The red tones in this image come from the Spitzer Space Telescope, revealing intricate dust clouds scattered throughout the galaxy. These clouds add an ethereal touch to M82's celestial landscape, hinting at hidden mysteries waiting to be unraveled. Completing this cosmic masterpiece is the blue radiance captured by the Chandra X-ray Observatory. This representation depicts hot gas within M82, offering a glimpse into powerful astrophysical processes occurring within its boundaries. Located 12 million light years away in Ursa Major constellation, M82 has long fascinated astronomers and stargazers alike. Its unique shape resembling a cigar earned it its popular name - Cigar galaxy. Through combining data from these remarkable observatories, we are granted an extraordinary window into our vast universe and gain deeper insights into distant galaxies like never before. This awe-inspiring print from Science Photo Library serves as a testament to human curiosity and our relentless pursuit of understanding the wonders that lie beyond our world.
