Cartilage cell, TEM C014 / 1432

Cartilage cell. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a chondrocyte cell from hyaline cartilage of the trachea (windpipe). The cell nucleus (purple) can be seen along with a large fat droplet (brown) and glycogen granules (pink). Chondrocytes are the only cells found in cartilage. They produce and maintain the cartilages extracellular matrix and. Hyaline cartilage is found in the epiphyseal plates of growing bones, and in the nose, larynx (voice box), trachea (windpipe) and bronchus. Magnification: x4000 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a cartilage cell, providing a glimpse into the fascinating world of cellular biology. Taken using a transmission electron microscope (TEM), this image reveals a section through a chondrocyte cell found in the hyaline cartilage of the trachea. The vibrant colors highlight various components within the cell. The purple nucleus stands out prominently, serving as the control center for cellular activities. Adjacent to it, we can observe a large brown fat droplet and pink glycogen granules, indicating their presence within this specialized cell type. Chondrocytes play an essential role in maintaining and producing the extracellular matrix of cartilage. As such, they are exclusively found in this connective tissue. Hyaline cartilage is particularly abundant in specific regions like the epiphyseal plates of growing bones, as well as structures such as the nose, larynx (voice box), trachea (windpipe), and bronchus. At x4000 magnification when printed at 10 centimeters wide, this photograph allows us to appreciate both its scientific significance and aesthetic beauty simultaneously. It serves as a reminder that even on microscopic levels, our bodies are composed of complex systems working together harmoniously to sustain life. Photographed by Steve Gschmeissner from Science Photo Library, this image exemplifies his expertise in capturing stunning visuals that bridge science and art seamlessly.
