Sigmund Freund, Austrian psychologist
Sigmund Freud (1856-1939), Austrian psychologist, caricature. Freud established the idea that mental disorders could have psychological as well as physiological causes. He theorised that the human mind contains both conscious and unconscious levels. Unpleasant memories are repressed and stored unconsciously, but they still affect the behaviour of a patient. Freud analysed dreams to study this unconscious level. His studies led him to believe that sexual impulses were responsible for irrational thoughts and behaviour (neuroses)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a caricature of Sigmund Freud, the renowned Austrian psychologist who revolutionized the field of psychology. With his groundbreaking theories, Freud introduced the concept that mental disorders could stem from both psychological and physiological causes. He believed that within the human mind existed conscious and unconscious levels, where repressed memories resided and influenced an individual's behavior. Freud's fascination with dreams led him to delve into the depths of the unconscious mind. Through analyzing dreams, he uncovered how suppressed thoughts and desires manifested themselves in irrational thoughts and behaviors known as neuroses. His studies ultimately led him to propose that sexual impulses played a significant role in shaping these irrationalities. In this abstract illustration, we see a symbolic representation of Freud's face captured during the 19th century. The artist skillfully combines elements of parody and symbolism to convey not only Freud's contributions but also his impact on psychology as a whole. As we gaze upon this thought-provoking artwork, we are reminded of Freud's lasting legacy in medicine and psychology. This print serves as a tribute to an influential figure whose ideas continue to shape our understanding of human behavior even today.
