Cape Evans hut, Antarctica
Cape Evans hut. Food supplies in the wooden hut built by the British explorer Robert F. Scott (1868-1912) and his team during the build-up to the South Pole Expedition of 1910-1912. The expedition ended in failure, with the death of Scott and several of his men. The interior of the hut has remained largely untouched and many of the items are as the explorers left them. The hut is located on Cape Evans, Ross Island, Antarctica, and is part of the McMurdo Station, a research facility operated by the US government. Photographed in the 2005/2006 summer season

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic Cape Evans hut in Antarctica, a testament to the ill-fated South Pole Expedition of 1910-1912 led by British explorer Robert F. Scott. The wooden hut served as a shelter and storage space for food supplies during their ambitious journey. Tragically, the expedition ended in failure, with Scott and several of his men losing their lives. The interior of this preserved hut remains frozen in time, offering an extraordinary glimpse into the past. Many items left behind by the explorers are still intact, untouched since they were last used over a century ago. Tin cans and bottles line shelves, showcasing the packaging and foodstuff that sustained these brave adventurers amidst harsh Antarctic conditions. Located on Cape Evans, Ross Island within Antarctica's vast icy landscape, this historical site is now part of McMurdo Station—an active research facility operated by the US government. The photograph was taken during the summer season of 2005/2006 when scientists had access to document this remarkable piece of history. As we observe this image captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded not only of human resilience but also our insatiable thirst for exploration and knowledge. It serves as a poignant reminder that even in failure lies invaluable lessons that shape our understanding of both our planet's extreme environments and ourselves as intrepid beings seeking to unravel nature's mysteries.
