Blood vessels in eye
False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of blood vessels in the choroid of the eye. A branch- ing network of arteries and veins can be seen in this area under the central fovea. The choroid is a tissue layer beneath the retina which supplies blood, thus food and oxygen, to light sensitive cells of the eye. Many cone cells occur on the retina at the central fovea area, specialized for acute day vision, and hence an area that uses much blood. The choroid is also darkened (blue) with pigment cells; pigment absorbs light rays passing through the retina and prevents light reflection. Magnification: x46 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x70 at 4x5 inch size. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © PROF. P. MOTTA/DEPT. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate network of blood vessels in the eye, captured through a false-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The image reveals a branching system of arteries and veins within the choroid, a vital tissue layer beneath the retina. Responsible for supplying blood, nutrients, and oxygen to the light-sensitive cells of our eyes, this region plays a crucial role in maintaining our visual sense. Located under the central fovea - an area abundant with cone cells specialized for acute day vision - these blood vessels are particularly abundant due to their high demand. As we gaze at this mesmerizing sight, it becomes evident that every detail has been magnified to perfection. At 6x7cm size, we witness this remarkable spectacle at x46 magnification; while at 4x5 inch size, it is further enhanced at x70 magnification. The choroid not only serves its functional purpose but also adds aesthetic appeal with its darkened blue hue caused by pigment cells. This pigmentation absorbs light rays passing through the retina and prevents unwanted reflections. Through this visually stunning photograph from Science Photo Library's collection of microscopic images, we gain insight into one of nature's most fascinating subjects: our own bodies.
