Blind stenographer using dictaphone, 1911 C017 / 7865

Blind stenographer using dictaphone. Stenography is the practice of recording notes in shorthand, usually using a specialised typing machine. Here, the notes were recorded in audio form and the stenographer is typing them up as she listens to them. Historically, this was one of the professions open to blind people. The dictaphone (at left) is a wax cylinder model. This technology originated from the phonograph, which had been developed by Alexander Graham Bell in 1877. The name Dictaphone was trademarked in 1907. This photograph, which dates from 27 April 1911, is from the Bain News Service, one of the USAs earliest news picture libraries

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in history, showcasing a blind stenographer skillfully using a dictaphone in 1911. Stenography, the art of recording notes in shorthand, was traditionally done on specialized typing machines. However, this innovative stenographer is transcribing audio recordings onto paper as she listens to them through her earphones. In an era when opportunities for disabled individuals were limited, blind people found solace and purpose in professions like stenography. This image sheds light on their resilience and determination to overcome societal barriers. The dictaphone featured here is a wax cylinder model, derived from Alexander Graham Bell's phonograph invention of 1877. Trademarked as Dictaphone in 1907, this technology revolutionized the way information was recorded and transcribed. Taken on April 27th, 1911 by the Bain News Service – one of America's earliest news picture libraries – this photograph transports us back to an era where typewriters filled offices with their rhythmic clatter. The monochrome composition exudes historical charm while emphasizing the importance of technological advancements during that time. As we observe this remarkable woman diligently performing her duties at her desk, we are reminded of how far we have come technologically and socially since then. Her unwavering dedication serves as an inspiration to all those who face adversity but refuse to let it define them.
