Bed bug, SEM
Bed bug. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a bed bug (Cimex lectularius). It has a rounded compound eye (pink) on each side of its head and an antenna protruding from each side of its mouth. The mouthparts (not seen) include a long stylet that is used to pierce human skin and to suck blood. A regular diet of blood is necessary for bed bugs to reach maturity. The bed bugs saliva causes itchy swellings on the skin. These swellings are usually only detected after the bed bug has retreated to its day-time resting place such as on mattresses, floors, or furniture
