ATV boosting the ISS, artwork
Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV, lower left) boosting the International Space Station (ISS), artwork. An ATV is an unmanned resupply vehicle used by the European Space Agency to supply the International Space Station (ISS). After being released in orbit it uses its thrusters to dock with the ISS. It is also used to boost the ISS to reverse orbit degradation. After being loaded with waste, it separates and de-orbits, burning up in Earths atmosphere. This is the second ATV (Johannes Kepler), launched on 16 February 2011. It docked on 24 February 2011, and de-orbited on 21 June 2011. The 14-minute boost took place on 18 March 2011

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork captures the remarkable sight of an Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) boosting the International Space Station (ISS) against the backdrop of Earth. The ATV, a resupply vehicle developed by the European Space Agency (ESA), plays a crucial role in supporting the operations and sustainability of the ISS. In this image, we witness the ATV named Johannes Kepler as it propels itself towards the space station using its powerful thrusters. The ATV serves multiple purposes during its mission. Not only does it transport essential supplies and equipment to sustain astronauts aboard the ISS, but it also aids in reversing orbit degradation by providing a boost to maintain optimal positioning. Once its duties are fulfilled, loaded with waste from previous missions, this technological marvel separates from the ISS and re-enters Earth's atmosphere where it disintegrates harmlessly. This particular ATV was launched on 16 February 2011 and successfully docked with the ISS on 24 February 2011. On 18 March of that year, for approximately 14 minutes, Johannes Kepler executed an impressive thrusting maneuver to propel and stabilize our beloved space station. As we gaze at this awe-inspiring illustration, we are reminded of humanity's progress in space exploration and our ability to utilize advanced technology for scientific advancements beyond our planet's boundaries. This artwork symbolizes not only human ingenuity but also international collaboration through ESA's contribution to crewed space missions in partnership with other nations involved in operating and maintaining this extraordinary feat of engineering -the International Space Station.
