Aryabhata mathematician and astronomer
Artists impression of Aryabhata, 5th century Hindu mathematician and astronomer. Aged 23, he wrote his major work " Aryabhatiya" in 499 CE. It summarises Hindu mathematics up to that time and puts forward a number of innovations in mathematics and astronomy. He is credited with introducing the use of zero in a place-value system and was instrumental in the birth of trigonometry. He concluded that Pi is an irrational number and accurately worked out its value. His methods for making astronomical calculations were adopted throughout the Islamic World. He understood that the earth is a sphere and revolves on its axis; that the moon and planets are illuminated by the sun and that eclipses are caused by the shadow of the moon on the earth He accurately calculated the circumference of the earth. His work was fundamental in creating a new school of astronomy in South India

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an artist's impression of Aryabhata, a brilliant mathematician and astronomer from the 5th century. At just 23 years old, he authored his groundbreaking masterpiece "Aryabhatiya" in 499 CE, which served as a comprehensive summary of Hindu mathematics at that time. Aryabhata revolutionized the field with numerous innovative contributions to both mathematics and astronomy. One of his most significant achievements was introducing the concept of zero within a place-value system, forever transforming numerical calculations. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in the birth of trigonometry and accurately determined that Pi is an irrational number while precisely calculating its value. His astronomical prowess extended beyond theory; Aryabhata recognized that our planet is indeed spherical and rotates on its axis. He also comprehended that sunlight illuminates not only Earth but also the moon and planets within our solar system. Furthermore, he astutely explained how eclipses occur due to the shadow cast by the moon upon our planet. Aryabhata's remarkable work resonated far beyond his homeland; his methods for making astronomical calculations were widely adopted throughout the Islamic World. His profound insights laid down strong foundations for a new school of astronomy in South India. This awe-inspiring photograph pays tribute to Aryabhata's exceptional intellect and enduring legacy as one of history's greatest mathematicians and astronomers.
