Artwork of Phobos spacecraft nearing Phobos
Artists impression of the Soviet Phobos spacecraft making its final approach to Phobos (lower right), the larger of the two small Martian moons. The spacecraft was launched in July 1988, & is due to make its encounter with Phobos in April/May 1989, after 120 days orbiting & observing Mars. It will then approach Phobos, descending to within 50 metres of the moons surface before releasing two lander probes. Phobos is shaped like a potato & measures 27x21x19km. It orbits 6000km above the Martian surface. The view shows Mars in the distance. The dark spots at top centre are two of its large, extinct volcanos

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the artwork of the Phobos spacecraft as it approaches its destination, the enigmatic Martian moon, Phobos. Created by an artist's imagination, this impression depicts the Soviet spacecraft in its final stages before encountering Phobos. Launched in July 1988, after orbiting and observing Mars for 120 days, this groundbreaking mission is set to reach its climax in April/May 1989. As we gaze upon this image, our eyes are drawn to Phobos itself - a peculiarly shaped celestial body resembling a potato with dimensions of 27x21x19km. Positioned just 6000km above Mars' surface, it orbits majestically while casting a mesmerizing shadow on the red planet below. The grandeur of this scene intensifies as we notice Mars appearing prominently in the distance. Its reddish hue contrasts beautifully against the dark expanse of space surrounding it. Atop lies two large extinct volcanoes that serve as reminders of Mars' tumultuous past. With anticipation building within us, we imagine witnessing history unfold through this daring mission. The Phobos spacecraft will soon descend towards Phobos' surface until reaching a mere distance of 50 meters from its rugged terrain. From there, two lander probes will be released into uncharted territory - unlocking secrets about one of Mars' most mysterious moons. This awe-inspiring artwork encapsulates not only scientific exploration but also humanity's insatiable curiosity about our cosmic surroundings and
