Artwork of the early Earth-Moon system

Artwork of the young Earth-Moon system. The Earth had recently formed when it was struck by a protoplanet " called Theia " roughly three times the size of Mars. Debris from the impact went into orbit, while the cores of the two planets merged. Within weeks of the event, the debris formed a Saturn-like ring around the Earth. Later collisions in this ring led to the formation of the Moon, probably within just a few thousand years. Initially the Earth and Moon were much closer together than they are now, and spinning more quickly

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork takes us back in time to witness the early Earth-Moon system, a pivotal moment in our planet's history. The image depicts the aftermath of a colossal collision between Earth and an enormous protoplanet named Theia. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing scene, we can almost feel the magnitude of this cosmic event. The impact was so powerful that it caused debris from both celestial bodies to be flung into orbit around Earth. In just a matter of weeks, these fragments coalesced to form a magnificent ring encircling our young planet, reminiscent of Saturn's majestic rings. This awe-inspiring sight serves as a testament to the sheer force unleashed during this extraordinary encounter. Within thousands of years following this cataclysmic collision, further collisions within the ring led to the formation of our Moon. At its inception, our Moon orbited much closer to Earth than it does today and spun at an astonishing rate. Through this stunning illustration, we are transported back in time to witness the birth and evolution of our planetary companion firsthand. It reminds us that even in its infancy, our solar system held unimaginable beauty and complexity waiting to unfold over billions of years. This artwork is not only visually striking but also serves as a reminder of humanity's insatiable curiosity about space and our relentless pursuit for knowledge about our origins.
