Armillary sphere, 17th century artwork

Armillary sphere, 17th century. Artwork of a French armillary sphere from 1685 by the French mapmaker Alain Manesson Mallet (1630-1706). This astronomical device shows the circles of the celestial sphere, and is used to demonstrate the motion of the stars around the Earth. The circles surrounding the Earth include the plane of the ecliptic, and the celestial equivalent of the equator, North and South Poles, and the Tropics of Capricorn and Cancer. Here the two main celestial meridians (colures) are marked, those of the equinox and the solstices. Armillary spheres were an important symbol of the rise of science in Renaissance Europe

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of 17th-century artwork - an armillary sphere. Created by the renowned French mapmaker Alain Manesson Mallet in 1685, this astronomical device beautifully depicts the celestial sphere and its intricate motion around our Earth. The circles encompassing our planet represent significant elements such as the plane of the ecliptic, celestial equator, North and South Poles, and the Tropics of Capricorn and Cancer. Imprinted on this masterpiece are two primary celestial meridians or colures - those of the equinox and solstices. During Renaissance Europe, armillary spheres like this one symbolized the rise of science and technological advancements. They were crucial tools for astronomers, navigators, and scholars alike to study star positions accurately. This historical artifact not only demonstrates mankind's fascination with astronomy but also serves as a testament to France's rich scientific heritage. The attention to detail in this artwork is truly awe-inspiring; it portrays both technical precision and artistic finesse. As we gaze upon this image captured by Science Photo Library, we are transported back in time to an era where exploration was fueled by curiosity about our place within the cosmos. This single photograph encapsulates centuries worth of knowledge while reminding us that even today, there is so much more left to discover about our vast universe.
