Born in Basrah (present-day Iraq), he travelled in Egypt and then settled in Islamic Spain where he spent most of his career. His most famous works were on optics. He studied the propagation of light and colours, as well as conducting experiments on refraction and dispersion. He accurately described the human eye, and the process of vision. He wrote about rainbows and eclipses, and estimated the height of the atmosphere based on his observations of when twilight started and ended. He also studied medicine and mathematics

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the brilliant mind of Alhazen, an Islamic scientist who made significant contributions to the fields of optics, medicine, and mathematics. Born in Basrah (present-day Iraq), Alhazen's thirst for knowledge led him to travel through Egypt before settling in Islamic Spain where he flourished professionally. Renowned for his groundbreaking works on optics, Alhazen meticulously studied the behavior of light and colors. Through rigorous experimentation on refraction and dispersion, he provided accurate descriptions of the human eye and the intricate process of vision. His profound understanding extended beyond optics as he delved into various scientific realms such as medicine and mathematics. Alhazen's intellectual curiosity knew no bounds; he explored natural phenomena like rainbows and eclipses with great precision. Impressively, based on his observations of twilight patterns, he even estimated the height of Earth's atmosphere. This monochrome illustration portrays a distinguished man wearing a turban that reflects his Persian heritage. The artwork beautifully captures both his physical appearance and historical significance. As we admire this portrait, we are reminded not only of Alhazen's immense contributions but also how diverse cultures have shaped our understanding of science throughout history. Science Photo Library presents this remarkable image that pays homage to one of history's greatest minds – Abu Ali Hasan ibn al-Haitham or commonly known as Alhazen – whose legacy continues to inspire generations in their pursuit of knowledge.
