3D printed chain mail C014 / 0272

3D printed chain mail. Close-up of chainmail material made using the process of stereolithography. Stereolithography (or optical fabrication) is an additive manufacturing (3D printing) technology used for producing models, prototypes, patterns, and production parts. It works by using a vat of liquid photopolymer resin that hardens (cures) when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light, and an ultraviolet laser to build the layers of an object one at a time. For each layer, the laser beam traces a cross-section of the part pattern on the surface of the liquid resin. Exposure to the UV laser light cures and solidifies the pattern traced on the resin and joins it to the layer below. As it progresses the solid object slowly rises out of the liquid resin

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of 3D printed chain mail, created using the innovative process of stereolithography. The close-up shot reveals the mesmerizing details of this solidified mesh-like material, a testament to the advancements in additive manufacturing technology. Stereolithography, also known as optical fabrication, utilizes a liquid photopolymer resin that hardens when exposed to ultraviolet light. With each layer meticulously built by an ultraviolet laser, this manufacturing technique allows for the production of models, prototypes, patterns, and even complex production parts. As we delve into the image's composition, it becomes apparent how each linked chain forms a resilient structure. The hardened resin creates a solid object that gradually emerges from its liquid state during the printing process. This fusion between chemistry and technology results in an impressive display of interconnectedness within this chain mail masterpiece. The photograph not only highlights the remarkable capabilities of 3D printing but also emphasizes materials science at its finest. By harnessing ultraviolet curable resins and photopolymerization techniques like SLA (stereolithography apparatus), scientists and engineers can achieve incredible precision in their creations. Pascal Goetgheluck's expertly captured image from Science Photo Library invites us to marvel at this technological marvel without delving into commercial applications or affiliations. It serves as a reminder that through additive manufacturing methods like stereolithography and optical fabrication, endless possibilities emerge for transforming raw materials into intricately designed objects with strength and durability.
