1862 Giant Ground Sloth Megatherium
Lithograph with contemporary colouring, continental version of the wallchart produced by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins for the Department of Science and Art 1862. It includes elements of the fourth and fifth wallchart. The animals are numbered 1 & 2 Anoplotherium commune, 4 & 5 Megatherium, 6 & 7 Glyptodon. The reconstruction owes much to the work of Richard Owen who studied and described the pleistocene/holocene megafauna of South America which Darwin collected in Argentina during his time on the Beagle

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable lithograph from 1862, featuring the awe-inspiring Giant Ground Sloth Megatherium. Created by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins for the Department of Science and Art, this continental version of the wallchart is a true masterpiece. The lithograph beautifully combines contemporary coloring with elements from the fourth and fifth wallcharts. Numbered animals take center stage in this illustration, with Anoplotherium commune occupying spots 1 and 2, Megatherium at numbers 4 and 5, and Glyptodon completing the lineup at positions 6 and 7. The reconstruction of these magnificent creatures owes much to Richard Owen's groundbreaking work on South America's Pleistocene/Holocene megafauna. Interestingly, Charles Darwin himself collected fossils in Argentina during his time aboard the Beagle expedition. The attention to detail in this artwork is truly astounding. Each creature comes to life through meticulous brushstrokes that bring out their unique features. From the massive size of Megatherium to the armored plates adorning Glyptodon's body, every aspect has been carefully rendered. Paul D. Stewart's print captures not only an extraordinary piece of scientific art but also pays homage to British contributions in paleontology during the nineteenth century. It serves as a testament to our fascination with Earth's ancient inhabitants while reminding us of how far we have come in understanding our planet's rich history.
