1838 Guerin Plesiosaur reconstruction

1838 Hand coloured copperplate engraving by Fries appearing in Guerins " Dictionnaire pittoresque" showing a Plesiosaurus dolicheroides skeleton lying beneath the ground, while fossil collectors attend a cliff in the distance. The accurate skeleton is copied from Conybeares 1824, " On the Discovery of an almost perfect Skeleton of the Plesiosaurus" Transactions of the Geological Society, Second Series, Volume 1, page 381-390 which contains the first scientific reconstruction of any prehistoric reptile and appeared in that volume as " Restoration of the Plesiosaurus dolichoderius and Icthyosaurus communis". British fossil discoveries of prehistoric reptiles were widely reported across Europe in the early nineteenth century. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © This image is Paul D. Stewart 2009. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print takes us back to the year 1838, immersing us in a world of scientific discovery and fascination with prehistoric creatures. The hand-coloured copperplate engraving by Fries, featured in Guerin's "Dictionnaire pittoresque" showcases a remarkable reconstruction of the Plesiosaurus dolicheroides skeleton. As we gaze upon this artwork, our eyes are drawn to the skeleton lying beneath the ground, meticulously depicted with accuracy borrowed from Conybeare's groundbreaking work published in 1824. This volume contained the first-ever scientific reconstruction of a prehistoric reptile, titled "Restoration of the Plesiosaurus dolichoderius and Icthyosaurus communis". It is no wonder that British fossil discoveries were widely reported across Europe during this time. Intriguingly, amidst this ancient scene lies a group of fossil collectors attending a cliff in the distance. Their presence reminds us of the tireless efforts made by early paleontologists like Buckland and Mary Anning who tirelessly searched for these remnants of Earth's past. The illustration transports us to Devon during the 19th century when paleontology was still an emerging field. It invites contemplation on how far our understanding has come since then while highlighting those pivotal moments that shaped it. With its rich historical context and artistic beauty, Paul D. Stewart's print captures not only an important moment in scientific history but also sparks curiosity about life millions of years ago when plesiosaurs roamed Jurassic seas.
