1833 Rev. William Buckland fossils colour

" The Reverend William Buckland D.D. F.R.S. Canon of Christ Church and Professor of Geology and Mineralogy in the University of Oxford 1833" Painted by Thomas Phillips and Mezzotint engraved by Samuel Cousins in 1833 with later hand colouring. Shown with some of his UK finds - holding the skull of a cave hyaena, with nautiloid fossil (flat) and Ammonites (Arietites) bucklandi fossil. Cave cross section diagram for teaching in background. Buckland was an influential paleontologist who described sciences first dinosaur. His works brought the prehistoric world into prominence in Britain. He believed he had found evidence of the flood. He was quite eccentric, and some like Darwin, found him a little too keen on celebrity. He was a good teacher, his own academic work improved by consulting William Conybeare. A tuberculous growth at the base of the skull reputedly caused madness in later life

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the renowned 19th-century paleontologist, Rev. William Buckland, surrounded by his remarkable fossil discoveries. Painted by Thomas Phillips and engraved by Samuel Cousins in 1833, this piece is a testament to Buckland's significant contributions to the field of geology and mineralogy. In the image, Buckland holds the skull of a cave hyena, symbolizing his groundbreaking work in paleontology. Alongside him are nautiloid and Ammonites bucklandi fossils, representing his meticulous study of prehistoric life forms. A detailed diagram of a cave cross-section serves as an educational backdrop for teaching purposes. Buckland's eccentric personality shines through in this artwork; he was known for his unorthodox methods and penchant for celebrity status. Despite some criticism from contemporaries like Darwin, Buckland's teachings were highly regarded due to his exceptional ability as an educator. Notably, Buckland described the first dinosaur ever discovered—a megalosaurus—bringing immense attention to Britain's prehistoric world. His belief that he had found evidence supporting Noah's flood added another layer to his fascinating character. However, later in life, it is said that madness plagued him due to a tuberculous growth at the base of his skull—an affliction that only added intrigue to this enigmatic figure. Paul D. Stewart masterfully captures all these elements within this thought-provoking print from Science Photo Library—a tribute to one of history's most influential scientists whose legacy continues to inspire modern-day paleontologists worldwide.
