Above, the young shepherd boy David is shown watching over his flock, with one hand on his sling and the other reaching out to protect a lamb from the jaws of a lion. This scene recalls the famous story from 1 Samuel 17:34-35, where David bravely defends his sheep from the lion and lioness, demonstrating his courage and strength to his father Jesse and the prophet Samuel. Beneath the image, we find another scene from David's life: his anointing by the prophet Samuel. Surrounded by his family, David is depicted with a humble expression as Samuel pours oil over his head, signifying God's choice of David as the future king of Israel.
