Atlantic Caravel Columbus Fifteenth Maria Sailed Santa

EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: Santa Maria of Columbus - The Legendary Caravel that Opened the Atlantic Gateway to the New World. This evocative image transports us back to the fifteenth century, an era of exploration and discovery that forever changed the course of human history. The Santa Maria, the largest of the three ships in Christopher Columbus's historic expedition, is depicted here in all her glory as she bravely sails across the vast and uncharted waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The Santa Maria, a caravel - a type of Portuguese merchant ship - was a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the age's mariners. Its distinctive features, such as its narrow hull, lateen sails, and tall, fore-and-aft rigging, allowed it to navigate the challenging conditions of the open sea. With a crew of around 80 men, the Santa Maria carried Columbus and his companions on their groundbreaking journey, which began in Palos, Spain, in August 1492. The Santa Maria served as the flagship, transport, and living quarters for Columbus and his crew during their momentous voyage. After landing in the Bahamas in October 1492, Columbus continued westward, eventually reaching the islands of Cuba and Hispaniola. However, the Santa Maria encountered a storm while anchored in the bay of present-day Haiti, and was wrecked in December 1492. Despite this setback, Columbus and his crew pressed on, eventually returning to Spain in March 1493 with news of their discoveries. This print, from the esteemed Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the past, allowing us to marvel at the courage and curiosity that fueled the Santa Maria's historic voyage and opened the Atlantic gateway to the New World.
