1840 Judaism L Aw Samaritans

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures a group of Samaritan elders gathered around the ancient Torah scrolls in the holy city of Nablus, Palestine, in the mid-19th century. The Samaritans, an ancient Jewish sect with distinct religious practices and a rich history, are depicted here in the act of studying the Book of the Law. The Samaritans trace their origins back to the biblical period, and they have maintained their unique traditions and customs despite centuries of cultural and religious influences from the surrounding populations. The Book of the Law, also known as the Pentateuch, is the first five books of the Hebrew Bible, which the Samaritans believe were revealed to Moses on Mount Gerizim. The scene depicted in this photograph is reminiscent of the biblical account of the dedication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, where the Israelites gathered to hear the words of the Law read aloud (Ezra 3:1-7). However, the Samaritans' practices differ in significant ways from those of the Jewish communities in Judea and beyond. For instance, they worship at Mount Gerizim rather than Jerusalem, and they follow a different text of the Pentateuch, which they call the "Samaritan Torah." Despite these differences, the Samaritans' commitment to their faith and their sacred texts is evident in this powerful image. The elders' serious expressions and focused gaze convey a deep reverence for the words of the Law, which they believe hold the keys to understanding their history, identity, and connection to the divine. The intricately embroidered head coverings and robes of the Samaritan elders add to the sense of tradition and solemnity, making this a striking and evocative representation of the Samaritan community in the mid-19th century.
