EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image from the annals of early Christian history, we find Saint Perpetua, a young and devoted follower of Christ, resolutely refusing to abandon her faith in the face of unimaginable persecution. Born in Carthage around 181 AD, Perpetua was a married woman with a small child when she and her servant Felicitas were arrested for their Christian beliefs during the reign of Emperor Severus Alexander. Despite the pleas of her family and the offers of a swift and painless death if they would only renounce their faith, Perpetua and Felicitas remained steadfast in their commitment to Christ. They were sent to the arena to be devoured by wild beasts, a fate that was reserved for the most ardent and unyielding of Christian martyrs. In this print from Mary Evans Picture Library, we see Perpetua, a vision of youth and determination, standing defiantly before the wild beasts that await her in the arena. Her unwavering faith in the face of certain death is a testament to the power of the human spirit and the enduring strength of the Christian faith in the face of persecution. The image transports us back to a time when Christianity was still a relatively new and embattled religion, and when the price of following its tenets was often the ultimate sacrifice. The courage and resilience of Saint Perpetua and her fellow martyrs continue to inspire and awe us to this day, and serve as a reminder of the enduring power of faith in the face of adversity. This powerful and moving image is a testament to the rich and complex history of the early Christian church, and is a must-have for any collection of historical or religious art. Whether used as a conversation piece in a home or office, or as a source of inspiration and reflection, this print is sure to captivate and inspire all who behold it.
