Dated to the late 19th or early 20th century, this historical print showcases the enduring legacy of this revered figure in Christian tradition. Andrew, one of the twelve apostles, is believed to have been born in Bethsaida, Galilee, around the year 6 AD. He was a fisherman by trade and was the brother of Saint Peter. According to legend, Andrew was crucified on a cross that was shaped like an X, or a saltire, which has since become the symbol of Scotland. The story of Andrew's martyrdom is deeply rooted in history. He is said to have been taken as a slave and brought before the Roman governor, Patroclus, in Greece around 60 AD. When asked to renounce his faith, Andrew refused, and as a result, he was sentenced to be crucified. The cross on which he was crucified was reportedly too small for him, so he was tied to a larger cross, shaped like an X, which was then extended at the sides. Andrew is believed to have endured this painful death with courage and faith, and his relics were later brought to Scotland in the 12th century.
