Russian moon launcher

Scale model of the N1 launcher. At left is a 1/10th scale model of the entire N1 vehicle, at right is a 1/5th scale model of the upper stage without its launch shroud. The N1 was intended to carry Soviet cosmonauts to land on the Moon. However, severe underfunding, lack of testing and a late start to the project meant that the launcher was unable to match the performance of the American Saturn V that carried the Apollo missions. Four N1 rockets were launched between 1969 and 1972, all of which failed before reaching orbit. When it was clear the Americans would win the race to the Moon, the N1 project was stopped and all evidence of it hidden

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable scale model of the Russian moon launcher, specifically the N1 launcher. In this image, we see two meticulously crafted models side by side. On the left stands a 1/10th scale model of the entire N1 vehicle, while on the right rests a 1/5th scale model of its upper stage without its launch shroud. The N1 launcher was an ambitious Soviet project designed to transport cosmonauts to land on the Moon during the intense Cold War era. However, due to severe underfunding, limited testing opportunities, and a delayed start to the program, this mighty rocket fell short in matching the performance of its American counterpart -the Saturn V- which successfully carried out Apollo missions. Between 1969 and 1972, four attempts were made to launch N1 rockets into orbit but all ended in failure before reaching their intended destination. As it became evident that America would emerge victorious in the race to conquer space's ultimate frontier -the Moon- funding for and development of the N1 project ceased abruptly. To further obscure any evidence or trace of this ill-fated endeavor from public knowledge or scrutiny during those tense times, all remnants were hidden away. This monochromatic photograph captures not only an awe-inspiring piece of engineering but also serves as a poignant reminder of how scientific ambitions can be shaped by geopolitical rivalries and unforeseen challenges encountered along our quest for exploration beyond Earth's boundaries.
