EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures both the exterior and interior of the imposing Russian Monument in San Stefano, Constantinople (now Istanbul, Turkey), a tribute to the conclusion of the Treaty of San Stefano signed on March 3, 1878. The monument was erected to commemorate the Russian victory in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78 and served as an ossuary for the fallen Russian soldiers. The monument's grandeur was considered arrogant by the Turks, who had not yet come to terms with their defeat. The exterior of the monument is a sight to behold, with its ornate columns, intricate carvings, and the majestic Russian double-headed eagle atop. The interior, however, is a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made during the war. The walls are adorned with marble tablets inscribed with the names of the fallen soldiers, their faces etched into the stone. The air inside is heavy with history, a testament to the events that unfolded over a century ago. The Treaty of San Stefano brought an end to the Russo-Turkish War and led to significant territorial gains for Russia, including the establishment of Bulgaria as an autonomous principality. However, the treaty was later revised by the Congress of Berlin, which reduced Russia's territorial gains and led to tensions between Russia and the Ottoman Empire. The monument, a symbol of Russian triumph, was eventually removed in 1914, following the outbreak of hostilities between Russia and the Ottoman Empire during the First World War.
