EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image showcases the majestic ruins of ancient Pergamon, or Pergamum, an ancient Greek city located in modern-day Turkey. Pergamon was the capital of the powerful Kingdom of Pergamon during the Hellenistic period, ruling over the region of Mysia in northwestern Anatolia from 281-133 BC. The city was strategically situated on a promontory on the north side of the Caicus River (modern-day Bakircay), 16 miles from the Aegean Sea. During the first century AD, Pergamon was renowned for its impressive masonry structures, including the famous Altar of Zeus, the Temple of Trajan, and the Red Basilica. The city was also home to one of the Seven Churches of Asia Minor, as mentioned in the New Testament's Book of Revelation. Today, the ancient ruins of Pergamon stand as a testament to the rich history and cultural significance of this once-great kingdom. The remains of the city's churches, now partially covered in rubble and overgrown with vegetation, add an air of mystery and intrigue to the site. The ruins, which include the remnants of masonry, stones, and fallen columns, offer a glimpse into the past, inviting visitors to explore the history of this ancient Greek city and its connection to the biblical world.
