EDITORS COMMENTS
On July 20, 1947, history was made as Princess Elizabeth of York, the future Queen Elizabeth II, married Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten in a grand and elegant wedding ceremony at Westminster Abbey. The day was filled with excitement and anticipation, as the people of London and the world watched on in awe. In this iconic photograph, we see the glass coach carrying the newlywed Princess and her father, King George VI, making its way down the Mall towards Buckingham Palace. The coach, drawn by eight white horses, is a stunning sight, its glass panels reflecting the cheers and waves of the large crowd that had gathered to catch a glimpse of the royal procession. The Princess, looking radiant in her ivory silk gown and the stunning diamond and pearl tiara, sits elegantly beside her father, who wears the uniform of the Royal Navy. The scene is one of pure joy and celebration, as the people of London and the world welcome the new Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh to their new life together. The glass coach was a traditional mode of transport for royal weddings, and its use on this day added to the sense of history and tradition that surrounded the event. The wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip was a momentous occasion, marking the beginning of a new era for the British monarchy and the start of a long and happy marriage. This photograph captures the magic and excitement of that day, and remains a cherished reminder of a royal wedding like no other.
