EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, taken at Waterloo Station in London on May 14, 1939, King George VI bids farewell to his cabinet ministers as he and the Royal Family prepare to embark on their Royal Tour of Canada and the United States. The King, dressed in his full state uniform, stands in the background, surrounded by his trusted advisors. To his left, Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, dressed in a suit and wearing a top hat, bids the King farewell. Next to him stands Lord Crewe, the Lord President of the Council, wearing a morning coat and striped trousers. In the foreground, the Queen, dressed in a elegant dress and hat, is flanked by her two daughters, Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret. Both princesses are wearing matching white dresses and hats, and appear to be waving goodbye to the assembled crowd. The Royal Tour of 1939 was a significant event, marking the first official visit of a British monarch to North America. The tour was intended to strengthen the bonds between the United Kingdom and its Dominions, and to promote goodwill and understanding between the peoples of the British Empire. The tour was cut short, however, due to the escalating situation in Europe and the impending outbreak of World War II. This photograph captures a poignant moment in history, as the King and his family bid farewell to their cabinet ministers and embarked on a journey that would take them across the Atlantic to a new world of adventure and discovery. The image of the King, dressed in his uniform, bidding farewell to his trusted advisors, is a powerful reminder of the importance of leadership and the bonds of loyalty and friendship that exist between governments and their people.
