EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial view captures the timeless beauty of the Royal Hospital Chelsea in London. Founded by King Charles II in 1683, this historic institution was established to provide care and support for old or injured soldiers, drawing inspiration from the renowned Invalides in Paris. Designed by the esteemed Sir Christopher Wren, this architectural masterpiece was meticulously crafted to accommodate up to 476 in-pensioners. After years of construction, the first pensioners were warmly welcomed within its walls in 1692. From this unique vantage point along the Thames River, Damian Grady's lens transports us back to August 2006. The print showcases not only the grandeur of the Royal Hospital but also its integration into an urban landscape that has evolved over centuries. The image reveals a harmonious blend of history and modernity as ancient brick buildings stand side by side with contemporary structures. As sunlight dances upon their surfaces, it illuminates a tranquil courtyard where veterans once sought solace and companionship. Damian Grady's photograph serves as a poignant reminder of both our past and present obligations towards those who have served our country selflessly. It encapsulates a place where heroes found respite amidst turbulent times—a testament to resilience and compassion that continues to inspire generations today.
