EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the late 19th century, offering a glimpse into the history of St Marys Church in Truro, Cornwall. The image showcases the magnificent west front of the church, captured from the High Cross end and looking towards St Marys Street. It is an incredibly rare photograph, as it was taken at a time when photography itself was still in its infancy. St Marys Church has a rich heritage dating back to its consecration in 1259. Over centuries, it underwent several reconstructions until its completion around 1518. However, this iconic medieval structure met its fate in 1880 when it was demolished to make way for the construction of Truro Cathedral. In this snapshot frozen in time, we see a small group of people standing before the railing that surrounds St Marys Church. Their presence adds scale and context to this historical moment. Unfortunately, due to unknown circumstances surrounding this photograph's originator or photographer, credit cannot be given. Today, only remnants remain as part of Truro Cathedral – specifically known as St Marys aisle – incorporating elements from the original church within its new design. This evocative print serves as a testament to lost buildings and architectural transformations throughout history while providing us with an invaluable window into Cornwall's ecclesiastical past.
