EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a slice of history on Lemon Quay from Back Quay in Truro, Cornwall during the mid-1940s. As the Second World War neared its end, this view showcases Taylors Transport Ltd. 's garage with an entire car park filled with lorries. Just out of frame to the right are the premises of H. T. P. Motors Ltd. , who played a crucial role during the war effort. During these tumultuous times, H. T. P. Motors Ltd. selflessly handed over most of their stock of cars and commercial vehicles to support the Army's needs while acquiring transport for various government purposes. Large cars were ingeniously converted into ambulances, ensuring essential civilian motor transport was provided and maintained. The parked vehicles seen in this image patiently await maintenance or conversion at the H. T. P Auxiliary Army Workshop, highlighting their vital contribution to wartime operations. From armament production to repairing Spitfire components, H. T. P. 's activities rapidly expanded as our country's demands grew. While we do not know who precisely captured this remarkable moment in time, it serves as a poignant reminder of Cornwall's unwavering dedication towards supporting our troops and contributing to the home front effort during one of history's darkest chapters.
