Lemon Quay and Lemon Bridge, Truro, Cornwall. 1926
A view of Lemon Quay and Lemon Bridge from Back Quay. The modern public toilets, which opened in September 1925, are visible just beyond the bridge. The workmen, petrol pump and the early motor car on Lemon Quay also appear in TRURI : TRUqbf.24. In this photograph, the Motor Works sign and both its petrol pumps can be seen, together with the Great Western Furniture Warehouse. Only just noticeable on the pavement approaching the parked car on Lemon Quay, is the figure of a one legged man. Limbless men were not an uncommon sight in the towns and villages of Britain right up to 1950s. They represented the wounded of The Great War and, later, The Second World War. A lorry stands on Back Quay on the right hand side of the photograph. Photographer: Arthur William Jordan. In the foreground, we can see the modern public toilets that were recently opened in September 1925, just beyond the bridge. The photograph showcases various elements of early 20th-century town living. A group of workmen can be seen going about their business near a petrol pump and an early motor car parked on Lemon Quay. The Motor Works sign proudly displays its name alongside two petrol pumps, while further down the street stands the Great Western Furniture Warehouse. However, it is not just these commercial aspects that catch one's attention. On closer inspection, one might notice a figure approaching the parked car on Lemon Quay – a one-legged man. This sight was not uncommon during this time period as limbless men represented those wounded in both World Wars. Completing this snapshot of history is a lorry standing on Back Quay to the right-hand side of the frame.
