Carnival Mayor Kidnap, Lostwithiel, Cornwall. July 1993

Lostwithiel Mayor, Warren Nicholls, was given special protection when he visited fete day on King George V playing fields, after rumours of a kidnap circulated. It was to no avail as 30 Brownies, Guides and Badgers overpowered his bodyguards and took the mayor up the adjacent fire stations training tower. He was eventually released by fire crew on a cherry picker. Photographer: Jonathan Barker

Captured in a Whirlwind of Mischief - Lostwithiel's Carnival Mayor Kidnap

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print from July 1993, we witness the extraordinary events that unfolded during Lostwithiel's vibrant carnival festivities. The town's esteemed mayor, Warren Nicholls, found himself at the center of an unexpected and audacious plot. Rumors of a potential kidnapping had swirled around the charismatic mayor, prompting him to be granted special protection during his visit to the fete day on King George V playing fields. Clad in his distinctive mayoral costume and surrounded by vigilant bodyguards equipped with radios and sharp suits adorned with dark glasses and hats reminiscent of the Blues Brothers, Mayor Nicholls ventured into what he thought would be a routine civic event. However, fate had other plans as an army of thirty mischievous Brownies, Guides, and Badgers cunningly overpowered his well-intentioned protectors. With sheer determination and youthful exuberance, they whisked away their unsuspecting captive up the towering training structure adjacent to the fire station. As chaos ensued below with bewildered onlookers clutching balloons and seeking shelter inside colorful tents scattered across the field, it was ultimately left to our brave fire crew heroes to orchestrate Mayor Nicholls' release. Ascending on a cherry picker like guardian angels descending from above, they triumphantly rescued their beloved mayor from captivity. This remarkable photograph captured by Jonathan Barker immortalizes both the spirit of camarader
